What failed

She skated seriously and placed fifth in junior pairs at the national championships in 1968, which ended the Olympic ambition, then fifth again in 1969, which ended the skating. She went to Vogue instead and stayed about seventeen years wanting to design and never designing. She left in 1987 without the editorship, which she counted afterwards as one of the things she did not get. Two years at Ralph Lauren followed, and she left that too, at thirty-nine, still with no label of her own.

What happened next

She opened her first salon at forty. Her wedding dresses became the most recognisable in the world, and Nancy Kerrigan skated at the 1994 Olympics in one of her costumes — the Games she had failed to reach as a competitor twenty-six years earlier. She sold the business in 2024 on annual sales of more than seven hundred million dollars.

The point

Her own summary is the useful part: she did not make the Olympic team, she did not get the editorship, and she blamed herself for not making the cut. That is the ordinary experience of wanting something and being told no, twice, in two different fields, before starting a third at forty.
