Ernest Shackleton

Ernest Shackleton in a heavy coat.
Bain News Service. He never reached the South Pole and never crossed Antarctica.

What failed

He never reached the South Pole and never crossed the continent. Scott put him on the relief ship against his will; he finished fourth of five standing for Parliament in Dundee; his own expedition turned back ninety-seven nautical miles short; and the Endurance was crushed before the crossing began.

What happened next

When the objective was gone he changed the objective. Five months on drifting ice, an open-boat voyage of about 1,450km to South Georgia, the first crossing of that island's interior — and the entire Endurance company came home.

The point

He is remembered for a plan that failed completely on day one. His competence was not in achieving objectives but in what he did once they became impossible.

The sequence
